Protouch wins Retail Week Technology Award 2009
Protouch has won their second award for its self service Kiddicare kiosks at the Retail Week Technology Award 2009.
The awards ceremony saw the touch screen and self service kiosk manufacturer win the EPoS Initiative Award alongside Kiddicare and K3. Kiddicare also took home The BT Multichannel Integration Award which the kiosks played an integral role in.

“From the moment we installed the kiosks we immediately achieved 50 per cent self service. The kiosks have opened up exciting growth opportunities to us”, said Scott-Weaverswright of Kiddicare.
The winners were announced at the prestigious London Hilton, on Park Lane on June 16, 2009 where the trio won the EPoS Initiative award for successfully introducing self-service order and payment kiosks to the Kiddicare superstore.
Now more than 50 per cent of Kiddicare’s customers use the kiosks, and as well as improving service, they have increased shopper spend.
Joanna Perry the Technology & Special Features Editor for Retail week said about the awards, “Retailers and technology suppliers came together to celebrate the industry’s achievements in the past year; between them they have shown how technology can be used for maximum impact across all operational areas of a retail business.
"While cash for IT investment is harder to come by, the winning implementations and projects have shown how the return can be both quick and substantial when new systems are closely linked to business needs.”
The self service kiosk was created using Protouch’s Xen X5 model, complete with a 19” touch screen, Verifone Secura, chip and pin unit and an 80mm receipt printer, each kiosk finished with cool, individual branded covered laminate.
The software was produced by K3, who partnered Protouch in the Kiddicare Solution.
Each of the kiosks gives information on product availability, and enables the customer to order and pay for their goods and arrange for collection and delivery there and then.
The kiosks also provide additional information on related items and promotions, and allow staff to view details of products that are not in store as well as showing them alternative items/products available.

IKEA rolls out Protouch kiosks for loyalty scheme
IKEA, the home furnishings giant, has implemented a suite of self service kiosks to improve customer in-store experience. Customers use the self service kiosks to sign up to join the IKEA FAMILY loyalty scheme. IKEA needed a quick, easy and instant way for customers to apply to its IKEA FAMILY loyalty scheme in store and implemented a suite of Xen X5 kiosks as the means to do so.
Studies show that loyalty cards are a vital tool to improve profitability and one of the most cost effective ways to build brand loyalty and improve customer retention. The self-service kiosks offer customers the convenience of signing up in-store and in addition, loyalty scheme customers benefit further by being the first to know of upcoming promotions, sales and events via on screen information targeted solely at them.
Tim Schroons of IKEA Belgium said, "We are very happy with the IKEA FAMILY registration kiosks that are installed in all Belgian IKEA stores. They allow us to have a much more efficient way of recruiting new IKEA FAMILY members without the presence of a co-worker being required. This versatile solution allows us to recruit new members and have existing members print out a temporary card or update their customer profile in a user friendly way".
Quant Marketing created the concept for the kiosk solution during its marketing-led IT projects in 2008 and selected Protouch as its hardware partner.
They are made from Protouch’s Xen X5 kiosk with 19” touch screens, 80mm receipt printers, keyboards and look great in store with full cover branded laminates and bright orange paint work.
Tom Quarry, managing director of Protouch comments: “We are really excited to be involved in Quants’s kiosk solution for IKEA. It is great to see our touch screen kiosks working so well within the project by improving IKEA’s operations and enhancing in-store experience for its customers”.
18 kiosks are currently in use across 6 Belgian stores with a potential rollout to further IKEA stores in Europe.
The Xen X5
The award-winning X5 is the star of the Xen kiosks after winning the Retail Systems Awards 2008 EPoS innovation of the year. Its smart blend of form, function and price has provided a leader for the EPoS market and shows the way for evolving retail environments.
Designed for easy upgrading and available with a number of additional options the EPoS solution it doesn’t stop as an EPoS unit though; many additional features can be added to the X5 to turn it into a ticket collection, customer loyalty or a home delivery system. And, with its extended back the internal parts can be fitted without it losing its slim profile.
Its steel, strong body and vandal resistant powder coat finish are scratch resistant and easy to clean. It can be branded with a customised vinyl logo or full colour graphic covering front and/or back and additionally finished to specific RAL colour. And, if the self service kiosk has no permanent location you can use its custom-made flight case to transport to its next spot.

An expert panel of judges in the retail industry will be selecting the winners, comprising of, Peter Federico, Group IT Director at bmi, (British Midland Airways) Ric Francis, Former Executive Director of the Post Office, James Henry, IT & Ecommerce Director of Flying Brands, Peter Mila, Information, Ecommerce & Logistics Director at Thomas Pink and Ian Woosey, Group IT Director of Carpetright.
This year, the awards saw some remarkably high level entries; both in terms of quality and quantity, which saw technology editor of Retail Week, Joanna Perry, congratulate the finalists on their exceptional efforts they have put in to create new and innovative technology. The awards are an annual event, and bring together some of the most experienced and professional companies within the technological industry, presenting a wide range of innovative, creative and customer-focused technology for 2009.
Tom Quarry, Managing Director of Protouch, said, “This is the third time we have been shortlisted for an award and we are delighted at the success of the kiosks and by the industries recognition that Protouch is leading the way for in store EPoS kiosk solutions.”
Kiddicare approached Protouch after finding that an average order on their website was nearly four times as more than that of its store, due to effective selling methods on the Internet. The nursery supplier was looking to find a way to provide customers with the option of purchasing individual brand merchandise in store.
The self service kiosk was created using Protouch’s Xen X5 model, complete with a 19” touch screen, Verifone Secura, chip and pin unit and an 80mm receipt printer, with each kiosk finished with cool, individual branded covered laminate. The software was produced by K3, who partnered Protouch in the Kiddicare Solution.
Each of the kiosks gives information on product availability, and enables the customer to order and pay for their goods and arrange for collection and delivery there and then. The kiosks also provide additional information on related items and promotions, and a great help to staff when a product is not in-store as they can show customers alternative items via the kiosk.
The new self service kiosks have been so well received in the new store, that Kiddicare plan to expand the kiosk service further and has since ordered several more units.
The nursery supplier have found that the kiosks are already reducing queues at the checkouts and allowing Kiddicare to manage more customers with less staff costs.
Tom Quarry, Managing Director of Protouch, said, “We are delighted that the Kiddicare kiosk solution has improved the in-store experience of Kiddicare’s customers. “I think Protouch and K3’s combined thinking offers great blue print for any product or service provider seeking multi-channel marketing.”
Protouch are continually working alongside other companies to provide solutions to their customers retail needs. With so many varieties of touch screens available, Protouch offer their clients exceptional service and high quality touch screen technology to fit with a company’s profile.
Quarry said, “We are continuing to develop new EPoS solutions like the Xen X4, which is being trialled by several big brands and looks to have great success also.”
The Awards will take place at the prestigious London Hilton on Park Lane on June 16, 2009, where 700 senior retailers from right across the industry are expected to turn up, proving it is really not a night to be missed.

Protouch & K3 Help Kiddicare Win ‘EPoS Innovation Of The Year’ Award
Protouch & K3 Help Kiddicare Win 'EPoS Innovation Of The Year' Award
Protouch, K3 & Kiddicare were chosen for the award of ‘EPoS innovation of the year’ at the recent Retail Systems 2008 Awards.
They were selected for their revolutionary in store kiosk solution which beat a number of other shortlisted companies such as Tesco & Wincor Nixdorf and The Co-operative Group.
The kiosk was born out of a simple brief – replicate the Kiddicare website on a kiosk in store so that customers can buy items as easily as they do online. Protouch supplied the hardware, K3 produced the software and the result was 28 kiosks operating in one Kiddicare outlet.
The kiosks give information about products, complementary items and promotions and take payment and arrange collection or home delivery. They allow Kiddicare to manage more customers, without extra staff and let customers spend more time browsing and no time queuing or carrying purchases.
“The Protouch and K3 kiosk solution leads the way for the retail sector by showing a glimpse of the store of the future. Our kiosks make the sales process faster, simpler and hassle free, so much so that customers are spending 4x more at the kiosks than they are at Kiddicare’s tills”, said Tom Quarry, MD at Protouch.
