ResidentsHQ wins National eWell-Being Award for Building Community Networks

ResidentsHQ, the social networking service focussed on injecting life and community spirit into modern residential developments, today announced its win at last week’s National eWell-Being Awards. Through providing a secure and private service for each development, ResidentsHQ aims to make it easy for residents to interact with each other, assist managing agents as well as bodies such as residents’ associations connect to those living within their properties, and help developers add value to new developments.

Andrew Painter, managing director, ResidentsHQ said: “This award validates our belief that social networks like ours can really make a difference. Through the intelligent application of social networking technology, we help residents break the ice and connect with their neighbours, and empower managing agents to communicate with those living in their properties. Our work in developments such as the Royal Arsenal, Imperial Wharf and Chelsea Bridge Wharf - another major regeneration programme - is proof of this.”

For example, prior to the ResidentsHQ website being launched in the Royal Arsenal Development, many residents had lived there for several years with very little interaction taking place. Within weeks of launch this had radically changed. Over 100 residents joined in the opening week of the service and began initiating running clubs, mother/toddler groups and cocktail parties. After six months of service, ResidentsHQ had 600 residents signed-up at Royal Arsenal, with over 100 logging in each day – a number which is set to increase as the website is being extended to allow residents to communicate with the property’s managing agent. It must also be pointed out that this growth in numbers has been almost totally organic, with little requirement for central communications ‘pushing’ the service.

Andrew concludes: “As well as helping residents able to easily connect with each other, they can also discuss topics of mutual interest in a forum, exchange goods in a local market place and share views on local businesses. Furthermore, our service has facilitated the community in coming together to protect their interests, by for example, using the ResidentsHQ online surveys functionality to lobby against local planning applications and parking regulations.”

The National eWell-Being Awards aim to highlight those organisations that are at the forefront of innovation in ICT for environmental and social improvement. The awards, now in their seventh successive year, are organised by SustainIT, an initiative of the UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development (UKCEED), and sponsored by BT and Unison amongst others.

Protouch wins Retail Week Technology Award 2009

Protouch has won their second award for its self service Kiddicare kiosks at the Retail Week Technology Award 2009.

The awards ceremony saw the touch screen and self service kiosk manufacturer win the EPoS Initiative Award alongside Kiddicare and K3. Kiddicare also took home The BT Multichannel Integration Award which the kiosks played an integral role in.

 Kiddicare Kiosk

“From the moment we installed the kiosks we immediately achieved 50 per cent self service. The kiosks have opened up exciting growth opportunities to us”, said Scott-Weaverswright of Kiddicare.

The winners were announced at the prestigious London Hilton, on Park Lane on June 16, 2009 where the trio won the EPoS Initiative award for successfully introducing self-service order and payment kiosks to the Kiddicare superstore.

Now more than 50 per cent of Kiddicare’s customers use the kiosks, and as well as improving service, they have increased shopper spend.

Joanna Perry the Technology & Special Features Editor for Retail week said about the awards, “Retailers and technology suppliers came together to celebrate the industry’s achievements in the past year; between them they have shown how technology can be used for maximum impact across all operational areas of a retail business.

"While cash for IT investment is harder to come by, the winning implementations and projects have shown how the return can be both quick and substantial when new systems are closely linked to business needs.”

The self service kiosk was created using Protouch’s Xen X5 model, complete with a 19” touch screen, Verifone Secura, chip and pin unit and an 80mm receipt printer, each kiosk finished with cool, individual branded covered laminate.

The software was produced by K3, who partnered Protouch in the Kiddicare Solution.

Each of the kiosks gives information on product availability, and enables the customer to order and pay for their goods and arrange for collection and delivery there and then.

The kiosks also provide additional information on related items and promotions, and allow staff to view details of products that are not in store as well as showing them alternative items/products available.

The Heatwave begins

This week forecasters predict that we could experience some of the hottest days of the summer so far and said there is a 60% chance of temperatures reaching 32C (89.6F). The Met Office has issued a "heat health" warning for this week.

The Department of Health have advised staying in the shade during the hottest parts of the day, avoiding strenuous activities and to stay hydrated by drinking plenty.  Children and the elderly are most at risk.  Air conditioning fans at home are a good way to keep cool and having ice lollipops in is another way to keep fluid levels up.  As we are not use to such hot weather lasting for so long, it is important to follow the advice on offer.  Too much sun can lead to health complaints, some short term such as dehydration and heat stroke.  But these can easily be avoided by looking after yourself in the sun.

NetVoucherCodes provides a massive selection of retailers that can help you prepare yourself and your family for the hot weather. There are retailers covering sun cream, sun-hats, fans, aftersun, sunglasses, summer clothing and footwear.  These products can be essential in ensuring you stay safe in the sun.  You don't have to sepnd a fortune either, as many retailers on www.netvouchercodes.co.uk have offers, vouchers and Summer Sales currently on at present, some as much as 70% off!

Here is just a small selection of the retailers available on www.netvouchercodes.co.uk; Boots.com, Sunglasses UK, AirConDirect, Miss Selfridge, Simply Beach, New Look, Born2BeCool, Kids Shoe Factory, Debenhams, D&A Designer Sunglasses, Schuh and Superdrug.

Dance Teacher Mirror Dilemma Solved: With New Featherweight Mylar Mirrors

Mirrors are one of the most important 'must haves' in any dance class, where students have to learn and improve their dance techniques. The dance teacher dilemma of being unable to use mirrors in the classroom has finally been solved with an innovative new product that has now been developed in the UK, the Featherweight Mylar Portable Mirror.

Independent dance teachers face a number of challenges when looking for dance mirrors for their classes. Often dance teachers are situated in multi-purpose venues, such as schools or local community centres, meaning installing fixed wall mirrors is out the question.

Portable glass mirrors are available on the market, but many dance teachers are unable to use them as they are too heavy and do not comply with safety regulations. In these tough economic times, the new mirrors also offer an alternative to expensive fixed wall mirrors, without compromising on quality of reflection.

The Featherweight Portable Mirror, made out of Mylar foil, is a dance mirror with a difference.  Made with a state-of-the-art metallic foil, rather than glass, the 4’ x 6’ mirror weighs just 4kg and gives an incredibly clear reflection. The mirror is mounted on a lockable wheel based stand, so is easily moved, secured and stored.

Glass Installations, the Stoke-on-Trent based firm manufacturing the new mirrors, has already supplied its Featherweight Portable Mirrors to dance teachers throughout the UK, with an extremely positive response. More details about the product can be found on the company’s website www.glassinstallations.co.uk

Set up in 1996 by Bob Quarmby, Glass Installations Ltd. began specialising in high impact mirrors to be used in the Leisure industry. In 2007 the company relocated to a larger site in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire to begin production of a new Featherweight Mylar Mirror. This new product, made out of a state-of-the art glassless foil, has the advantage of being lightweight and also has the capability to be produced in huge sizes.

IKEA rolls out Protouch kiosks for loyalty scheme

IKEA, the home furnishings giant, has implemented a suite of self service kiosks to improve customer in-store experience. Customers use the self service kiosks to sign up to join the IKEA FAMILY loyalty scheme. IKEA needed a quick, easy and instant way for customers to apply to its IKEA FAMILY loyalty scheme in store and implemented a suite of Xen X5 kiosks as the means to do so.

Studies show that loyalty cards are a vital tool to improve profitability and one of the most cost effective ways to build brand loyalty and improve customer retention. The self-service kiosks offer customers the convenience of signing up in-store and in addition, loyalty scheme customers benefit further by being the first to know of upcoming promotions, sales and events via on screen information targeted solely at them.

Tim Schroons of IKEA Belgium said, "We are very happy with the IKEA FAMILY registration kiosks that are installed in all Belgian IKEA stores. They allow us to have a much more efficient way of recruiting new IKEA FAMILY members without the presence of a co-worker being required. This versatile solution allows us to recruit new members and have existing members print out a temporary card or update their customer profile in a user friendly way".

Quant Marketing created the concept for the kiosk solution during its marketing-led IT projects in 2008 and selected Protouch as its hardware partner.

They are made from Protouch’s Xen X5 kiosk with 19” touch screens, 80mm receipt printers, keyboards and look great in store with full cover branded laminates and bright orange paint work.

Tom Quarry, managing director of Protouch comments: “We are really excited to be involved in Quants’s kiosk solution for IKEA. It is great to see our touch screen kiosks working so well within the project by improving IKEA’s operations and enhancing in-store experience for its customers”.

18 kiosks are currently in use across 6 Belgian stores with a potential rollout to further IKEA stores in Europe.

The Xen X5

The award-winning X5 is the star of the Xen kiosks after winning the Retail Systems Awards 2008 EPoS innovation of the year. Its smart blend of form, function and price has provided a leader for the EPoS market and shows the way for evolving retail environments.

Cineworld rolls out Protouch kiosks

Cineworld, the 2nd largest multiplex cinema chain in the UK, has installed Protouch’s Xen X5 and X4 self service kiosks into a number of its UK cinemas.

The self service kiosks are to be used for both Cineworld’s Unlimited film programme and for ticket collection.

Cineworld installed the Xen X5 self service kiosks into five of its cinema sites which include Glasgow, West India Queys and Cheltenham in late 2008. They are used in the cinema’s main foyer for Cineworld’s Unlimited film programme that entitles visitors to watch any film, any day, any time and at any Cineworld Cinema from just £13.50 a month.

Cinemagoers simply sign up to the programme by entering their details into the self service kiosk. From this an A4 receipt with a photo of the member on is then printed out, which they can use as identification until their membership card arrives in the post.

In the six months that the self service kiosks have been operating, they have shown impressive results, increasing membership by 100 new members per week. Due to the success, Cineworld plan to install the Xen X5 kiosk into all of its cinemas, selling the Unlimited programme.

John Anderson Cineworld’s Marketing Co-ordinator said, “The Unlimited program is a large and important part of Cineworlds business and distinguishes them from every other cinema company in the UK and Protouch’s X5 kiosk is helping advance the programme.”

On the back of the success of the X5s, Cineworld has greatly expanded its kiosk operations and is now rolling out 34 of our new Xen X4 kiosks into 13 of its UK cinema sites.

The X4s will be used by cinema goers for ticket purchase and collection and will run as either wall or floor mounted kiosks using the latest Chasis Printer technology for printing ticket receipts. Collectively the kiosks have brought down ticket purchase handling and paper costs and are particularly beneficial for managing customer data.

Protouch are currently Europe’s number one manufacturer and distributor of touch screen equipment, touch screen monitors and digital signage. Their award-winning Xen X5 is the star of the Xen kiosk range after winning the Retail Systems Awards 2008 EPoS innovation of the year.

Its smart blend of form, function and price has provided a leader for the EPoS market and shows the way for evolving retail environments.

How the Xen X5 can work for you

Designed for easy upgrading and available with a number of additional options the Xen X5 doesn’t stop as an touch screen EPoS unit.

Many additional features can be added to the X5 to turn it into a ticket collection, customer loyalty or a home delivery system. And, with its extended back, the internal parts can be fitted without it losing its slim profile. Its steel, strong body and vandal resistant powder coat finish are scratch resistant and easy to clean.

It can be branded with a customised vinyl logo or full colour graphic covering front and/or back and additionally finished to specific RAL colour. And, if the kiosk has no permanent location you can use its custom-made flight case to transport to its next spot.

Flexibility with the Xen X4

The Xen X4 is a wall mountable version of the award winning Xen X5 kiosk. The design of the Xen X4 fits conveniently against an indoor wall or can be neatly mounted onto a custom made floor stand.

The Xen X4 can be manipulated for all business matters, including adding chip and pin and receipt printer making it ideal for busy retail environments such as cinemas or train stations. Alternatively, it can also be used as an information point either wall or floor mounted to maintain a uniform feel within a client’s environment.

Shoplaptop survey reveals people are taking their laptops to bed

A recent study has found that many people who own a laptop are browsing the web in their pyjamas for more than six hours a week. The survey conducted by Credant Technologies found that more than half of UK workers take their laptop or other mobile devices to bed and use them before they go to sleep.

Credant Technologies, a data protection company, surveyed 300 workers to uncover patterns of laptops use and security implications and 57 per cent of those said that they spend at least six hours a week doing work on their laptops from their bed before they go to sleep.

Most of them said that their companions found the habit “very annoying” and 8 per cent of the offenders admitted spending more time on mobile devices than talking to their partners each night.

Forty-four per cent of the respondents said they store important work documents on their mobile devices and 54 per cent of those devices lacked encryption. One-fifth of the respondents acknowledged using wireless networks that aren’t secure while they work in bed.

VP at Credant, Michael Callahan, said, “This survey confirms that there is a growing population that is no longer restricted by working hours or confined to the office building itself. "People are mobile and will work anywhere -- even in bed. Therefore, when sensitive and valuable data is being held on these devices and they get lost, it can have pretty detrimental and far-reaching consequences to both the worker and their employer."

The survey also revealed that eighty-seven percent of respondents favour connecting to the Internet via wireless networks while in bed. Forty-seven percent said they connect to wireless networks in hotels without thinking about security.

Credant advised the 4 per cent of respondents who said the last thing they do before going to sleep is to check their e-mail messages and complete work to "take a long, hard look at their gadget-obsessed lives."

The company also advised encryption of data stored on mobile devices, the use of strong passwords, awareness of all points of connection, turning off unsecured Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices, and leaving the laptops behind at bedtime. With so many people turning to the comfort of their laptops before bed, Shoplaptop.co.uk can offer their customers over 350 individual laptops at a wide of prices for you to choose from.

Wickedelic Lingerie launches sexy, sophisticated and sleek website

Lee Mill, Devon - Wickedelic Lingerie, a leading retailer of sexy lingerie, has launched a completely re-designed website, tailoring the shopping experience to customer needs.

The site features many new improvements. A secure two-page checkout allows shoppers to purchase items with confidence and ease, while an improved loyalty program makes it easier for customers to gain rewards for purchasing.

In addition, the site offers various social features to engage the lingerie community, and an updated design that reflects the firm's modern and forward-thinking philosophy.

The former site, www.wicked-lingerie.co.uk, has now been changed to www.wickedeliclingerie.co.uk.

"Our new website is wider, innovative and user-friendly, and really serves as a model for what customers expect when they shop on the internet," says Nick Gibbens, web manager for Devon-based Wickedelic Lingerie.

"Our previous website was a little outdated, and did not completely serve the purpose of informing our customers about the large number of products we sell. Much like upgrading to a newer, better motor, we also upgraded to a better web address - www.wickedeliclingerie.co.uk," Mr Gibbens added.

The in-house website development team of Wickedelic Lingerie built the new site that is sexy, sleek, sophisticated and user friendly; and most importantly reflects the company's position in its sector.

Leading London-based digital marketing agency Affiliate Program Advice provided consultancy for the re-design.

About Wickedelic Lingerie:

Protouch: Kiddicare kiosk range shortlisted at the Retail Week Technology Awards

Protouch, Europe’s No 1 manufacturer and distributor of touch screen monitors equipment have been shortlisted in the Retail Week Technology awards for their self service kiosk range for nursery supplier, Kiddicare.

The touch screens company have been shortlisted for the EPoS Initiative Award for their self service kiosks, specifically designed for the UK’s largest nursery supplier, which were installed at Kiddicare’s store in Hampton, Peterborough in April 2008.

The Kiddicare kiosk range was shortlisted, alongside three other entries, for its great functionality and benefits to both Kiddicare’s business and its customers. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony due to take place at the prestigious London Hilton, on Park Lane on June 16, 2009.

An expert panel of judges in the retail industry will be selecting the winners, comprising of, Peter Federico, Group IT Director at bmi, (British Midland Airways) Ric Francis, Former Executive Director of the Post Office, James Henry, IT & Ecommerce Director of Flying Brands, Peter Mila, Information, Ecommerce & Logistics Director at Thomas Pink and Ian Woosey, Group IT Director of Carpetright.

This year, the awards saw some remarkably high level entries; both in terms of quality and quantity, which saw technology editor of Retail Week, Joanna Perry, congratulate the finalists on their exceptional efforts they have put in to create new and innovative technology. The awards are an annual event, and bring together some of the most experienced and professional companies within the technological industry, presenting a wide range of innovative, creative and customer-focused technology for 2009.

Tom Quarry, Managing Director of Protouch, said, “This is the third time we have been shortlisted for an award and we are delighted at the success of the kiosks and by the industries recognition that Protouch is leading the way for in store EPoS kiosk solutions.”

Kiddicare approached Protouch after finding that an average order on their website was nearly four times as more than that of its store, due to effective selling methods on the Internet. The nursery supplier was looking to find a way to provide customers with the option of purchasing individual brand merchandise in store.

The self service kiosk was created using Protouch’s Xen X5 model, complete with a 19” touch screen, Verifone Secura, chip and pin unit and an 80mm receipt printer, with each kiosk finished with cool, individual branded covered laminate. The software was produced by K3, who partnered Protouch in the Kiddicare Solution.

Each of the kiosks gives information on product availability, and enables the customer to order and pay for their goods and arrange for collection and delivery there and then. The kiosks also provide additional information on related items and promotions, and a great help to staff when a product is not in-store as they can show customers alternative items via the kiosk.

The new self service kiosks have been so well received in the new store, that Kiddicare plan to expand the kiosk service further and has since ordered several more units.

The nursery supplier have found that the kiosks are already reducing queues at the checkouts and allowing Kiddicare to manage more customers with less staff costs.

Tom Quarry, Managing Director of Protouch, said, “We are delighted that the Kiddicare kiosk solution has improved the in-store experience of Kiddicare’s customers. “I think Protouch and K3’s combined thinking offers great blue print for any product or service provider seeking multi-channel marketing.”

Protouch are continually working alongside other companies to provide solutions to their customers retail needs. With so many varieties of touch screens available, Protouch offer their clients exceptional service and high quality touch screen technology to fit with a company’s profile.

Quarry said, “We are continuing to develop new EPoS solutions like the Xen X4, which is being trialled by several big brands and looks to have great success also.”

The Awards will take place at the prestigious London Hilton on Park Lane on June 16, 2009, where 700 senior retailers from right across the industry are expected to turn up, proving it is really not a night to be missed.

The Smallest And Greenest Server Monitoring Solution From ServersCheck

ServersCheck Monitoring Appliance is the smallest and greenest device on the market

ServersCheck, which specialises in sensors, hardware and software for server room monitoring, launches a unique concept with the Monitoring Appliance. This device isn’t only the smallest solution for server monitoring on the market, due to its extremely low power consumption it also monitors servers more cheaply than a classic server or PC that runs with Open Source or free software.

Every monitoring solution involves three costs: hardware (server), software and electricity. Those who use Open Source software have low or no software costs, but they do have hardware costs (purchase, electricity and cooling). The major advantage of the ServersCheck Monitoring Appliance is its electricity costs. A traditional server uses 438 W or more, while the ServersCheck solution is almost 30 times more efficient and uses less than 15 W.

A cost comparison example*:

Traditional server monitoring

Hardware: Not included

Software : Open Source or payable software
Purchase value: free or payable
Electricity costs for hardware and cooling for 5 years: 2066 $
Total cost over 5 years: at least 2066 $

ServersCheck Monitoring Appliance

Hardware: Is included
Software : ServersCheck Monitoring Software
Purchase value: 1699 $
Electricity costs for hardware and cooling for 5 years: 71 $
Total cost over 5 years: 1770 $

The greenest solution
The ServersCheck Monitoring Appliance uses almost 30 times less power and that’s very good for the environment. The ecological footprint of this apparatus is minimal. A traditional server discharges more than 2300 kg of CO2 annually**. For the Monitoring Appliance this is limited to barely 79 kg, once again almost 30 times less!

Maarten Van Laere, CEO of ServersCheck, is extraordinarily proud of this innovative product: “We were able to develop a complete solution for server monitoring that requires little space, a small budget and very little power. Our successful Monitoring Software is used by small and medium-sized companies as well as civil and military authorities, universities and large companies like Yahoo, Facebook, HP, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Yahoo, BT Ericsson and Philips. This solution was made to make monitoring accessible for smaller budgets but we see that larger organisations also choose our solution. We already have indications that the Monitoring Appliance will be just as successful as our Monitoring Software.”

Price and availability
The ServersCheck Monitoring Appliance with its preinstalled Monitoring Software and a GSM modem costs 1699 $ and is available at www.serverscheck.com/store

A test version of ServersCheck Monitoring Software, the award-winning software by ServersCheck, is available at www.serverscheck.com/download

ServersCheck Monitoring Appliance highlights:
• The ServersCheck Monitoring Appliance is a complete browser and SMS based solution to monitor server rooms. This small, power efficient, cost friendly device can monitor up to 100 items.
• Small: it fits in the palm of your hand.
• Green: it uses less than 15W to operate. That's is 30 times less compared to a traditional PC. It's also silent: no fan.
• Browser based: just point your web browser to the appliance to manage the monitoring platform.
• SMS based: the device sends out text messages to your phone over the cell phone network using the included modem. This ensures that you will still receive alerts even when your complete network is down. Two-way traffic is also possible via SMS: the user can send an SMS to the device and then receive the network status from the device via SMS.
• Plug and Play: everything is installed so that the device is ready to go.

Protouch & K3 Help Kiddicare Win ‘EPoS Innovation Of The Year’ Award

Protouch & K3 Help Kiddicare Win 'EPoS Innovation Of The Year' Award

Protouch, K3 & Kiddicare were chosen for the award of ‘EPoS innovation of the year’ at the recent Retail Systems 2008 Awards.

They were selected for their revolutionary in store kiosk solution which beat a number of other shortlisted companies such as Tesco & Wincor Nixdorf and The Co-operative Group.

The kiosk was born out of a simple brief – replicate the Kiddicare website on a kiosk in store so that customers can buy items as easily as they do online. Protouch supplied the hardware, K3 produced the software and the result was 28 kiosks operating in one Kiddicare outlet.

The kiosks give information about products, complementary items and promotions and take payment and arrange collection or home delivery. They allow Kiddicare to manage more customers, without extra staff and let customers spend more time browsing and no time queuing or carrying purchases.

“The Protouch and K3 kiosk solution leads the way for the retail sector by showing a glimpse of the store of the future. Our kiosks make the sales process faster, simpler and hassle free, so much so that customers are spending 4x more at the kiosks than they are at Kiddicare’s tills”, said Tom Quarry, MD at Protouch.
