Fertility clinics to provide patients with costed treatment plans under fertility regulator’s new Code of Practice

Fertility clinics will be expected to provide every patient with a costed treatment plan, under new guidelines for UK fertility clinics published today.

Costed treatment plans are just one of the changes set out in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority’s (HFEA) 8th Code of Practice for fertility clinics which comes into effect with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008 on 1 October 2009. Costed treatment plans set out how much treatment will cost before it starts.

Plans will be updated if the costs change during the course of treatment.

Other key changes to the Code include:

  • a clear definition of supportive parenting to help them make a welfare of the child assessment before carrying out treatment
  • a cooling-off period for couples who have parted but who have embryos in storage allowing time for former partners to come to a reconciliation
  • bringing the HFEA’s long standing ban on sex selection for non-medical or ‘social’ reasons into law.

Professor Lisa Jardine CBE, Chair of the HFEA, said,

“With the majority of people in the UK funding their own treatment, cost is a major concern. The changes to our Code will help ensure that patients know upfront exactly how expensive their treatment will be.

“The UK’s fertility clinics treat thousands of patients each year and are responsible for the safety of these patients, their eggs, sperm and embryos. Our new Code of Practice sits alongside robust and targeted regulation, to ensure that clinics are absolutely clear about their responsibilities. “

Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss

You Too Can Join In the Summer Fun

Hypnotherapy helps you rediscover play

The sun might have put his hat on for a day of play. But quite frankly despite the glorious sunshine you feel stuck indoors. However a Watford-based hypnotherapist says you too can join in the fun.

Help is at hand if despite the glorious sunshine, you dread putting on a bikini because your weight has a life of its own, you can’t trust your stomach to behave in public, or maybe you’re simply too petrified to get past your own front door.

Hypnosis has been around for years and can often help people get on with the lives they choose where diets, pills and bullying tactics haven’t delivered.

Hypnotherapist and founder of thoughtsbecomereality.co.uk, Rakesh Kakaya said: “Summer is the time that our dreams come to life, and we see sparks of potential for a brighter future.

“However it can also highlight in neon technicolour all the things we are dissatisfied with in our lives, not least weight and health issues.

“While it is a very good thing to take action towards our desired goals, if we don’t address our automatic thought patterns, motivations and learned behaviour en route we are likely to sabotage the very success we desperately want to see.

“Hypnotherapy has been proven to be a most effective way to make massive positive changes in your life. Old unwanted patterns of behaviour, such as addictions and phobias, can be removed and new, desired behaviours implemented, all at an amazing pace. So call now and book an appointment, summer has only just begun.”

Men’s Underwear Wars – further pressure on the high street

One of the UK's leading online underwear stores have declared War on the UK's men's underwear prices.

www.boomlads.com has been selling men's underwear online since 1993 but has now decided to permanently be 10% cheaper than any other UK online or highstreet price.

This adds further pressure to struggling highstreet retailers.

Logistics Director for boomlads.com said "We have had a great year even before we have decided to always be 10% cheaper than the UK's cheapest price. Its a sign of the downturn that even successful companies are pulling out all the stops. We are waging war on all other men's underwear sellers, we will sell at cost if we have to. We still have the best service, its now about doing everything you can to keep the customer coming back for more."

The highstreet can't compete with prices at boomlads.com, they will have to revert to offering customers an 'experience' rather than a better price.

JOY LAUNCHES CHOCOL-ART, THE BIRTHDAY CARD GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT

JOY LAUNCHES THE BIRTHDAY CARD GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT

The dream of creating an edible birthday card has finally become a reality for fine art illustrator Joy Cockle of Lancashire based CreARTivity.

Joy came up with the concept a year ago and after researching the market has brought her idea to life and launched a range of fine illustration edible cards called Chocol-ART.

Commenting on the launch of the new range Joy said, “Like so many other people I love eating chocolate and whilst I’ve been illustrating greetings cards over the last few years I often wondered if I could transfer my creations onto chocolate and present it as an edible birthday card.

“I did some research and found that I could, so I produced some samples which went down a storm with family and friends… and Chocol-ART was born!”

The chocolate birthday cards are available in milk, plain or white chocolate varieties in three designs, two featuring Joy’s signature Jester and the other a birthday cake design.

Joy continued, “We’re convinced these are the first truly illustrated chocolate birthday cards and initial sales have been very good. I’m currently working on a number of additional card designs and would also welcome commissions, which would include an original piece of artwork as well as the birthday card…a real treat for that special birthday.

“The cards are only available at my workshop at Backridge Farm near Clitheroe, but I’m currently talking to other gift retailers across Lancashire with a view to making the Chocol-ART range available to all.”

For more information about the Chocol-ART birthday cards, contact Joy on 01200 429337 or visit Joy’s workshop and gallery at Backridge Farm, Twitter Lane, Waddington, Clitheroe which is open daily from 10am to 4pm.

Chicken Tikka Masala Claimed by Scotland

Curry Crazy Glasgow Restaurant lays claim to Chicken Tikka Masala, Britain's most popular dish.

Yumm, Indian Food...

The "Daily Record" has reported that Glasgow's Shish Mahal restaurant wants the city to be recognised as the home of chicken tikka masala.

It claims that the dish which is now served up more than 25 million portions a year in the £2.8billion Indian Food Industry, was invented in the Seventies after a customer complained his chicken was dry.

The story tells how Chef Ali Ahmed Asham prepared a sauce using spices soaked in a tin of Campbell's condensed tomato soup which he had been eating while recovering from a stomach ulcer.

Now the Shish Mahal wants the dish to have regionally designated legal protection just like the recently announced claim to the Balti by Birmingham's Balti Triangle.  It could be renamed to Glastikka!

By the Fifties, there was an explosion of curry houses as immigrants continued to arrive into Scotland from India and Pakistan and, with little English and few qualifications, many took jobs in the catering industry.

There are now over 9,000 Indian Restaurants across the UK, feeding 2.5million people each week.

Unfortunately, the Shish Mahal doesn't accept Online Ordering.

Napkin.com – Food at a Click

PRESS RELEASE – 6th July 2009 14-00 GMT
- FOOD & DRINK/LIFESTYLE SECTIONS

Napkin Ltd - Company Background Napkin.com – food at a click ©

Napkin.com launched in the UK in 2007 and is an internet food and drink portal that has developed an internet “takeaway” business. Founded by a former strategic consulting partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers and his son, Napkin provides an online interface to help individual and corporate customers secure internet access to food and drink from all levels of the restaurant market. The proposition (now being promoted in the UK) will be rolled out globally from 2010.

What we do
Napkin is one of the cuter online sites and intends to extend the traditional concept of the takeaway to permit even fine dining restaurants to offer suitable dishes to the market. Why shouldn’t it be possible to have a great chef prepare a fabulous dessert for a private dinner party or special celebration? Wouldn’t it be useful if that superb restaurant wine list were a little more accessible when the off-licence was closed. Napkin even hires the conveyor belts used by Yo Sushi through our site to help whisk the food around a large area or a marquee for a private party! We can only dream of The Fat Duck selling a portion of its products online but there is no reason why they shouldn’t. (Having said that we should probably approach Heston Blumenthal to see if he would be interested given his uniquely innovative role around food).

On Napkin.com, our restaurants (we call them Napkins), can establish a profile of their menu and upload pictures of their logos/staff/restaurant and food. This gives them a little more personality than a straightforward listing or a reference to their menu. They are also able to display lengthy text to describe their uniqueness or descriptors of their food. I suppose it’s a kind of “Facebook” for restaurants.

In providing a service whereby orders can be placed both quickly and efficiently Napkin signals the end of lengthy phone calls or the need to explain to customers the details of their menu. Napkin is already acquiring customers who have not traditionally offered a takeaway service but now see our portal as a means of so doing. (We have just signed up the Made In Italy and Biagio groups) Perhaps even more significantly, in the difficult trading conditions that lie ahead some restaurants are able to expand their identities online and offer several types of cuisine from the same kitchen and are only limited by the talents of their chefs. The virtual restaurant has arrived…….we are already aware of several market makers who intend to capitalize on their quality food brands and utilize our online trading portal to offer product to market with ease and speed. We feel sad for the smaller restaurants who have sometimes invested quite significant monies in developing their own static on-line identity and yet they still lack a trading capability.
Napkin charges only a trivial annual subscription to set up a new food/drink outlet. For the price of a tank of petrol any restaurant in the UK can have a fully functional, trading website to help boost their volumes and capture incremental trade!

One of the most potent aspects of the website is that restaurateurs have full control panel access over their menu and pricing; this allows them to manage their throughput and load in a way that is sensitive to their commercial pressures at any given point in the week or time of year. With the fast changing price of rice….expensive reprints of takeaway menus to be discarded by householders is a thing of the past.

Napkin has signed even leading players who have their own online websites such as Yo! Sushi and Firezza, the fastest growing pizza chain in the UK. We see no conflict between the various channels to market that the modern consumer demands. Customer retention is going to be a key critical success factor in 2009 for everybody in the restaurant industry. The fact that the customer’s behaviour will not be linear is simply something we have to comprehend and manage.

Let’s talk about Text baby
Napkin.com intends to develop and utilize the full suite of mobile technology to allow customers maximum ease of use when ordering “at a click”. Napkin has secured 627546.com to allow that possibility. There may well be a scramble for some famous domain names in numbers .....

Napkin has established an early link up with TopTable
Not all our customers will always be ordering a takeaway and hence for those moments when “dining-in” is the right answer we have established a link-up with TopTable to allow our users to also book a restaurant on-line.

Napkin is a gold partner of the London Tourist Board
In order to support the London economy and ensure that all visitors get access to great food napkin has formed a partnership with the London tourist board to help promote all our restaurants and give them maximum publicity. With the Olympics coming how could we not?

Napkin.com offers takeaway discounts to all NHS staff across London
Napkin.com, has lifted a little of the recessionary gloom by arranging that an array of London hospital staff can benefit by securing a 15% “Red Cross” discount. The discount is available for some 9500 NHS medical staff spread across the largest NHS trust in the UK (Imperial College Healthcare). The participating restaurants (Napkins) who make this offer possible see this as a way of saying thank you to some of those who are not well rewarded or recognised for the enormous public service they provide. Our thanks go to Hazel Melnick for making this happen.
Napkin intends to extend this concept to both Licensed Taxi drivers and NUS members from January 2009 and is presently in discussions to determine what level of discounts might be supportable by our restaurateurs.

Corporate account holders
Napkin can also help large, dispersed organizations or companies who are keen to exert greater cost control over how diverse employee populations spend on casual catering. Napkin can give these relationships greater visibility and hence structure the supplier relationships appropriately.

Most large companies could save over 20% of their catering costs simply by having an account and exerting some stewardship over employee choices. Not a popular choice but in the current climate a necessary one.

Fresh, funky & edgy

We are very lucky to have the support of an exciting up and coming fashion photographer Kate Bellm (www.katebellm.com) who is helping us to identify some unique imagery that we feel will become iconic in the restaurant trade. This imagery will be released during 2009 as we engage with different market sectors. This is how students eat pizza….© Kate Bellm

Survival of the fittest
Already we have seen some of our restaurants lose 30-50% of their in-house volume in the few weeks run up to Christmas 2008. This loss is likely to be sustained in 2009 and needs to be supplemented by an effective, tailored and targeted online solution. Our favourite story is of the restaurateur who has on his menu “Graham’s surpise”…..each Friday Graham calls in for a curry and is given a bag. The contents of this bag is known only to the restaurateur….using Napkin.com Graham now feels very special in that his dish can be added as a menu item. Graham is a market of one, as are we all. We like Graham and hope he stays in the Napkin fold and keeps clicking in 2009.

How can we help?
We are a new company and actively want you to us your ideas as to how you feel Napkin should develop to be a successful portal for both customers and restaurants. Napkin is your site and we are very responsive to new suggestions for additional functionality that you would find useful. We look forward to hearing from you.

GPs looking for clear guidance on swine flu

Chief Medical Officer to address doctors’
concerns personally by podcast

A poll of GPs by Doctors.net.uk, the largest and most active network of medical professionals in the UK, has revealed that, so far, only 9% of GPs in the UK have been given regular, clear and concise guidance about swine flu by their primary care trust (PCT).
Responding to a significant number of questions from doctors about the disease, Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, will address them directly in an exclusive Doctors.net.uk podcast (to be published from 10th July 2009).
The poll suggested that many respondents felt they were being deluged with information (44%), but that much of what was being communicated was unclear. The poll also showed that 16% of GPs felt they had received contradictory advice from their PCT and other organisations.
Dr Tim Ringrose, medical director at Doctors.net.uk, said: “Doctors have been battling to make sense of the stream of information from different sources. They are now looking for clear concise information to help them get prepared and to enable them to answer questions from the public.
“The CMO’s decision to answer their questions directly through this online professional network is being welcomed by doctors across the country.”
Sir Liam Donaldson’s podcast is available to all GMC registered medical professionals, over 90% of whom are already members of Doctors.net.uk. Members have until close of play on 8th July to post questions for him to answer. Doctors can visit www.doctors.net.uk/flu for further information.

Fast Food – Order Takeaway Online

A new nationwide service has been launched in the UK to help Users locate an interactive online takeaway food order service in their local area.

Fresh Pizza Yumm

It is called Y4Food.co.uk and is the brainchild of Justin Eames, a Hampshire-based entrepreneur.

Why Four? Because Y4 is the common reference for the receptor that has been identified as a mediator of the regulation of food intake and appetite, hence Y4Food or Satisfy your Appetite for Food in an abstract sense.

There are currently over 30 online takeaway order websites listed, covering almost 6,000 restaurants. The host sites are indexed regularly to ensure data is kept as fresh as the food.

Justin says, “The most frustrating part of ordering online is trying to find a takeaway restaurant that serves your local area. We have just set up a new service that finds your local takeaway restaurant and links through to the right page on the host site ready to place your order.”

Customers are able to search local restaurants, pass through seamlessly to the host site, and select food from the online menus, order takeaway and home delivery.

The system does not require registration, and there are many additional functions being planned for the site, such as being able to write reviews and rate restaurants on quality, service and value.

Meals ordered using this service cost no more than they would directly from the restaurants and simplifies the process of finding, ordering and paying for takeaway food.
