Clough Bottom Farm Cottages have won the ‘Self Catering Award’ at the prestigious Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board’s Tourism Awards 2009/10.

The three luxury holiday cottages, which were up for two awards at the ceremony, were presented with their trophy by Radio 2 DJ and fellow Northerner Stuart Maconie.

A celebration of innovation and creativity in the North West Tourism Industry - over 300 people attended the awards ceremony, held at Ribby Hall Village. This, the sixth annual ceremony saw a remarkably high level of entries which were narrowed down to four shortlist entries per category.

Protouch wins Retail Week Technology Award 2009

Protouch has won their second award for its self service Kiddicare kiosks at the Retail Week Technology Award 2009.

The awards ceremony saw the touch screen and self service kiosk manufacturer win the EPoS Initiative Award alongside Kiddicare and K3. Kiddicare also took home The BT Multichannel Integration Award which the kiosks played an integral role in.

“From the moment we installed the kiosks we immediately achieved 50 per cent self service. The kiosks have opened up exciting growth opportunities to us”, said Scott-Weaverswright of Kiddicare.

The winners were announced at the prestigious London Hilton, on Park Lane on June 16, 2009 where the trio won the EPoS Initiative award for successfully introducing self-service order and payment kiosks to the Kiddicare superstore.

Now more than 50 per cent of Kiddicare’s customers use the kiosks, and as well as improving service, they have increased shopper spend.

Joanna Perry the Technology & Special Features Editor for Retail week said about the awards, “Retailers and technology suppliers came together to celebrate the industry’s achievements in the past year; between them they have shown how technology can be used for maximum impact across all operational areas of a retail business.

"While cash for IT investment is harder to come by, the winning implementations and projects have shown how the return can be both quick and substantial when new systems are closely linked to business needs.”

The self service kiosk was created using Protouch’s Xen X5 model, complete with a 19” touch screen, Verifone Secura, chip and pin unit and an 80mm receipt printer, each kiosk finished with cool, individual branded covered laminate.

The software was produced by K3, who partnered Protouch in the Kiddicare Solution.

Each of the kiosks gives information on product availability, and enables the customer to order and pay for their goods and arrange for collection and delivery there and then.

The kiosks also provide additional information on related items and promotions, and allow staff to view details of products that are not in store as well as showing them alternative items/products available.

New Low Carbon Buildings Programme scheme provides grants to tackle climate change

Householders, communities and the public sector can benefit from a range of energy technologies, designed to help combat climate change, thanks to grants available via the Low Carbon Buildings Programme.

Following the Budget announcement on 22 April an additional £45 million has been allocated to programme. LCBP Phase Two will receive an additional £35 million of funding while the original programme will be boosted by a further £10 million.

The programme will be open to all products and installer companies registered on the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), such as Heating Renewables, who offer a variety of installations from solar heating, solar lighting and wind turbines to solar photovoltaics, bio-energy and ground/heat source air pumps.

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is an independent scheme that certifies microgeneration products and installers in accordance with consistent standards. It is designed to evaluate microgeneration products and installers against robust criteria providing greater protection for consumers.

The MCS is the only certification scheme to cover all microgeneration products and services, and has support from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, industry and non-governmental groups.

The extended Low Carbon Buildings Programme will continue to provide grant funding to charitable organisations, community groups and the public sector. Organisations may apply for up to 50% of the cost of installing approved technologies up to a maximum of £200,000 (though maximum grant levels may depend on the nature of the organisation).
