Must-have Memorabilia
Bruce Lee's handwritten notebook for his intended book entitled 'The Tao of Chinese Gung Fu' has come to market for the princely sum of £100,000.
The spiral bound notebook, measuring 8.5x11", contains over thirty five pages in Bruce Lee's handwriting and is comprehensively illustrated with Lee's martial art drawings!
American-born Chinese martial artist, actor and founder of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee is considered the father of modern martial arts with many modern techniques directly attributable to the Jun Fan Gung Fu fighting style he developed.
An excerpt from the book explains: "Gung Fu is a special kind of skill; a fine art rather than just a physical exercise or self defense. To the Chinese 'Gung Fu' is a subtle art of matching the essence of the mind to that of the techniques in which it has to work. The principles of 'Gung Fu' is not a thing that can be learned, like a science, by fact finding and instruction in facts. It must give spontaneously, like a flower, in a mind free from emotions and desires."
The notes cover Lee's profound and meaningful thoughts on the higher rationale of the martial arts as well as exercise routines, including a list of exercises titled, ‘women’s workout’, complete with various illustrations and diagrams in Lee's hand.
The text is written in English, yet the title on page one is penned in Chinese (translated as) 'The Tao of Chinese Kung Fu'. The work was intended to be published in book form to explain the 'Tao' (principle or way) of Gung Fu.
Ultimately the contents of this notebook were published in the 1997 book entitled 'Bruce Lee: The Tao of Gung Fu - A Study in the Way of Chinese Martial Art (a copy of the book accompanies the notebook). The notebook came to market from the collection of Lee's protégé, Taky Kimura, and includes a signed letter of authenticity from Kimura.
The notebook is available to purchase from Frasers Autographs www.frasersautographs.com.
